The Supreme Court today extended the timeline for the Competition Commission of India (CCI) to decide and give a ruling in the Amazon-Future Coupons case by two more weeks. The original deadline set by the Delhi High Court for the antitrust body to issue its decision was November 29th, 2021.
At the outset, a bench comprised of Chief Justice N V Ramana and justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli stated that it would not go into the merits of the case and would rather grant the US firm additional time, in addition to the time granted by the Delhi High Court, to present its case before the CCI. “We’re not going into specifics. We will extend the deadline by two weeks. You make the most of your time by appearing before the Commission and arguing your case (CCI). “You raise all your objections,” the Bench said, dismissing Amazon’s appeal against the Delhi High Court verdict.
As senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for a Future group firm, attempted to justify the refusal to postpone the hearing in the CCI at the request of Amazon, the bench said, “What was the tearing hurry which led the CCI to conclude the proceedings. Please do not invite us to make a statement on the merits of the case.” The bench then disposed of the appeal of the US firm against the order passed by the Delhi High Court.
