In a historic achievement, 12 forts constructed by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj have been recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, marking a moment of pride for Maharashtra and India. The forts, including 11 in Maharashtra and one in Tamil Nadu, were inscribed for their outstanding universal value, encompassing their military significance, architectural brilliance, and cultural importance.
The forts listed are Raigad, Pratapgad, Panhala, Shivneri, Lohgad, Salher, Sindhudurg, Suvarnadurg, Vijaydurg, and Khanderi in Maharashtra, and Gingee in Tamil Nadu. The proposal, titled “Maratha Military Landscape of India,” was prepared by the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums under Maharashtra’s Department of Cultural Affairs.
The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) stated, “These forts symbolize the bravery, architectural traditions, and the concept of Swarajya (self-rule) championed by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.” The recognition highlights their role in uniting diverse communities to establish a kingdom focused on citizen welfare.
In February 2025, a delegation led by Maharashtra’s Cultural Affairs and Information Technology Minister, Ashish Shelar, visited Paris to advocate for the UNESCO designation. The proposal was selected by the Prime Minister’s Office and forwarded to UNESCO, with significant contributions from architect Dr. Shikha Jain and Director of Archaeology Dr. Tejas Garge.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar congratulated the people of Maharashtra, calling it “a historic occasion” that celebrates Shivaji Maharaj’s vision of Hindavi Swarajya. He emphasized the forts’ role in fostering unity across castes and communities for a welfare-oriented kingdom.
